Should You Incorporate Before You Launch Your WordPress Blog?
A lot of people are under the impression that they need to go through the process of starting a corporation before they launch their first online business.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. The minute that you start a blog—or any website for the intent of making a profit—you are in business as a sole proprietor.
You don’t need a business license. You don’t need a business banking account. Down the road, if you making the income to warrant a business banking account, you will have to go through the process of setting up your business entity, which again can be a sole proprietorship. It does not have to be a corporation.
I highly recommend this approach because every single business—online or offline—involves a measure of risk and a high rate of failure.
From that perspective, you need to start as a sole proprietor to keep expenses down to the rock bottom minimum while you are building your online business and until you are realizing a growing profit.
The Internet provides one of the most amazing and cost effective means to go into business on a global scale for around $120 per year (that’s for webhosting and a domain name). You need a PayPal account, a blog and a Google Adsense account to start an online business as a sole proprietor.
So, what’s the big risk in starting a blog as an online business? It’s not money (unless you are buying every “fast money” program out there).
The risk is all about your time investment and what you are going to get in return for your time investment.
So, developing an online income for the independent WordPress blog owner is not about a great expense, it’s about getting started and making sure that you are getting results that you can monitor.
Setting up a corporation won’t help your online business become more profitable sooner. To me, it is an expense that is better left until profits dictate a more appropriate online business structure.
What will bring you online income faster is…
Taking action and getting your blog started, armed with the right knowledge.
You have the unique ability right now to build a business around you and your interests, instead of trying to “fit in” to some sort of online business model that you have little or no interest in.
In other words…
If your blog (business) is fun for you, then it’s not work.
Have a plan. Get started. Do something everyday with your blog. Work smartly. Most of the knowledge and tools you need to get started are already on this blog and are featured in the IMS Newsletter.
And in 6 months or less…
You will be in the black—which is something MOST businesses never see.
