As you are tracking your blog progress, one of things that you want to do is to EXCLUDE yourself from your traffic statistics programs if at all possible.

Why?

Because you can rack up a ton of what look like “visits”, but it’s really just you, adding and editing posts, changing your blog appearance, reviewing how new ads look on your blog and on and on.

So, how do you exclude yourself from being counted in your traffic statistics?

It’s pretty easy actually.

Using Google Analytics, you set up a filter to exclude yourself from being counted. This is done by IP Address (more about this in a minute).

Using the Firestats plugin, there is a setting you can click to exclude the administrator (you).

Using the StatCounter plugin, you can exclude yourself by IP address and with an “exclude” tracking cookie.

Let’s talk about IP addresses for a minute…

An IP address is simply a unique numerical address for a computer, a server, or Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is a number that looks like this:

92.231.443.23

You can find the IP address for the Internet connection you are using now right on this blog – look at the sidebar to the right (at the bottom). Your IP address (and some other info) is displayed there.

The most important information you need to know is this:

If you access your blog from work, you will have a different IP address than you do at home (different ISP).

So when you are filtering yourself from your statistics…

You should exclude each IP address that you use to access your blog or website.

To find your IP address at anytime, just check out the IP address display on this blog. Use that to exclude your IP address(es) from your blog or website statistics.

Accurate statistical data is important and it is less accurate if your visits are counted in the mix.

And trust me—you can rack up some “visits” to your blog if you don’t exclude yourself from your traffic statistics programs.
