My attempt at blogging years ago was not the success story that you usually hear. I made a number of critical mistakes that could have put me far ahead had I known what the heck I was doing.

Instead, I quit blogging after 18 months not even realizing that my lack of traffic and income were my own doing.

It wasn’t the blog — it was me keeping me from success with that first WordPress blog.

Here’s a laundry list of 11 critical mistakes I made with my first WordPress blog:

1. I didn’t have the plugins needed to optimize my blog posts and maximize traffic.

2. I didn’t do any keyword research for my market.

3. I didn’t have a ping optimizer plugin, keeping my blog from pinging upon post editing.

4. I didn’t use a custom permalink structure.

5. I did not expand my ping list (more than that, I didn’t know what it was or how it worked).

6. I didn’t use a sitemap plugin.

7. I didn’t use a 3 column theme in order to monetize that blog properly.

I wish this list was all inclusive, but those are the biggy’s.

If I had set-up my first blog properly, right from the beginning…

Well, let’s put it another way. I don’t even want to speculate on the amount of traffic and income I lost over 18 months because of shear ignorance.

And here’s the real kick in the pants…

All the mistakes I have mentioned are solved with free WordPress plugins and/or a bit of knowledge. There’s no rocket science involved at all.

What you do need is to be smarter than I was when I made the decision to start a blog.

You can find most, if not all the information you need to avoid making the mistakes I made when I started my first blog. I will be talking more about the basics of Internet marketing with your WordPress blog as well as each of the essential plugins you need to get the most out of your blog.
