Are You Funny Enough To Be A Comedian?
Here is a question that has crossed the mind of many funny people in everyday life…
“Do I really have the comedy talent to become a comedian?”
While there are simply too many factors involved to answer this question directly…
What I can do is identify two of what I believe to be the most important and observable indicators associated with naturally funny people that contribute heavily to their ability to generate laughter—before they ever take the step to become comedians:
1. Naturally funny people use a specific, identifiable sentence structure which enhances laughter generation when they communicate with others at work, at home or at play.
They use this particular sentence structure naturally and without thought. It is virtually an “automatic” condition.
It is this sentence structure that greatly enhances the “element of surprise” in a response or statement that generates laughs. This same sentence structure (not a joke formula) is also used in 95%+ of all “punchlines”.
Understanding The Element Of Surprise
This easily observable sentence structure, coupled with an individual’s confidence, mannerisms, voice tone and facial expressions provides the powerful combination that causes laughter to happen when they speak without having to think about it.
2. Naturally funny people seem to have the ability to make strangers or people they don’t know well laugh with relative ease—to the point where a comment may be made on a regular basis without solicitation that sounds something like this:
“Have you ever thought of being a comedian?”
Those are the two most solid indicators that I know of to indicate whether or not someone should seriously consider taking a shot a stand-up comedy or not.
And here’s my last stand-up comedy tip:
If the indicators above accurately describe you and you do make the decision to take a shot at stand-up comedy…
Stay away from “joke writing” and trying to “become” what you think a comedian should be. You already ARE a comedian, using techniques and strategies that already work for you. You just need to structure “you” for the stand-up comedy stage.
