Hello –
I found this using the search phrase you wondered about several times as to why people use it. In my case it is because I was hoping to see what a routine looks like on paper, particularly how detailed. I realize it isn’t for memorization, but I see a lot of mention of having a tight set, and the importance of removing extra words. The second reason was to see how this would then be condensed into a set list to keep just in case when on stage.

This is such an important point: “Unless an individual can visualize a comedian and their delivery style — the vast majority of stand-up comedy material doesn’t read funny from a piece of paper” (Point 3 above). I realized long ago that when I can VISUALIZE my delivery in advance, whether it be for a public performance or just a joke or quip that can I may use in casual conversation, the response is almost always better. And if I can also visualize the setting, so much the better. (This might also explain why, after watching a comedian, jokes come to us in that performer’s voice.)
Successful athletes — professional golfers, for example — use this technique regularly: visualize the shot, then execute.
