I like the topical approach better. It makes way more sense. It's easier to develop material and way easier to remember what I want to say. And a ton easier to structure. One topic leads into another topic. Sometimes there is a connection from one topic to the next. Sometimes there is no transition. I just start a new topic. If I tried to memorize pages and pages of jokes that I sat down and created from a blank sheet of paper, I have no doubt that I would be going about doing stand-up the hard way. Stand-up is hard enough as it is. Why make it harder? :-)
