One thig is abundantly clear from this article and the subsequent comments: there is a wide variety of comedic tools and styles. Which reinforces the concept Steve has been arguing all along -- there is much more to successful comedy than being able to write a joke. Very interesting discussion!

In reply to <a href="https://www.realfirststeps.com/628/standup-comedy-bottom-line/comment-page-1/#comment-2128">Patrick Gaffey</a>.

Personally, I think everyone can learn someone from everyone; regardless of style and their audience (kids, young adults, adults only, etc.) Even from that magician, you can observe his timing, delivery style, audience rapport, sense of confidence, etc. Even if a comedian is not my cup of tea, I can still learn from him. What's working? What's not? Is the audience responding? How does he handle hecklers or interact with the audience in general. I don't have to like his style to observe his skills and appreciate his talent. Learn from one and all. But always remember to be yourself! But being true to you and your own style doesn't mean you can't learn positive and negative things from others!

Before I used to judge comedians purely on what I thought of them. "Comedians are only funny if I find the funny". This article made me realize even more that my thinking was completely flawed. I am not the person that the comedian needs to make laugh. It is the audience. It is about seeing them laugh and having the smile in anticipation. That is comedy.
