It seems like people are under the assumption that people joke books exist where all the jokes are written down on paper the same assumption can be used in stand up comedy. I can definitely see the reasons but like you said. Stand is more than just reading from a piece of paper. Stand up is all about entertaining the audience. People who just want their jokes reviewed are wanting to drive a car with just the engine and the rest of the inner workings taken out.

Once again, you’re right. Even in public speaking, a skill that, in a way, is easier to coach, top speakers will tell you to be very, very careful about getting coaching. Most speakers have had to struggle to become professionals despite, not because of, coaching. I’m glad that you won’t coach just for the money.

I’m also glad you put the part in about joke writers. I was wondering, based on your aversion of the standard joke writing method, what your take on professional joke writers was.

It’s amazing to me how simple and obvious it is that there is very little chance to succeed, coach or not, without developing some sort of your OWN original style.

If this was a cookie-cutter industry, you would see much more attractive male and female headliners. How many comedians are real lookers?

Leading actors and actresses are usually visually appealing because it’s easier to coach acting than comedy. Plus, there is very little truly LIVE TV anymore, so actors can get 25 takes to get it right.

As a comic, we are always LIVE, and if our jokes took 25 takes to perfect with coaching, we would be miserable open-mic level only performers going broke on coaches. Believe that!
