John Smith could still use his real name. He could do lots of bits about being an average guy…a Joe Blow…Jane Doe kind of guy. In comedy, you can use ANYTHING, even your name, for comedic purposes. I have seen comics joke about their high pitched voice (as a male) or extra large hands or extra large belly. So don’t rule out even your real name. As there maybe a joke or two waiting to be told!

Stage names seem to be really of personal choice. If your name is unique enough then I can see why most comedians would opt to just use their name. However, if your name when googled brings up somebody else, it would time to pick a stage name. Names are always fun.

I wouldn’t recommend that type of stage name myself. But that’s not my call — it’s completely up to the artist.
